Five children drown in Kurigram floods

Four children drowned in flood waters while another one drowned in a pond as the overall flood condition in Kurigram districts continue to deteriorate leaving hundreds of people marooned under water on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Moni Khatun, daughter of Maidul of Gachbari under Chilmari UP, 9-month-old Hasanul Haque, son of Faridul Islam of Banshpatari village, disabled Bithi of Chunmul Para of Raniganj, Habibullah, 6, son of farmer Mahbubur of Hatia union of Ulipur Upazila and Alo Khatun of Phulbari Upazila. 

Civil Surgeon Dr Aminul Islam said that the children drowned under flood water as water of all the rivers were swelling persistently. 

A total of 390 villages of 55 unions of the district were inundated while at least 350,000 people were living under the open sky in inhuman conditions.

Md Rumanuzzaman, Assistant Engineer of WDB said that the water of Dharla River is flowing 112 cm above the danger level while water of Brahmaputra River is flowing 108 cm and 79 cm above danger level at Chilmari and Nunkhawa points respectively.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Hafizur Rahman said they gave 15 kg rice to each of 2,000 families in three flood-hit areas of the district.
