At least five children have died of HTLV-I Associated Myelopathy (HAM) disease in a week at Sialdah of Sajek UP in Baghaichari upazila of Rangamati. District Civil Surgeon office confirmed the matter on Thursday night

District Civil Surgeon Bipah Kheesa said there are about 100 children still infected with ham in three villages. In the last week, five children with ham died, she said “We know that there is a sudden outbreak of ham in that remote area. Children suffering from pneumonia from ham are getting sick. We sent the emergency medical team there.”

Another special medical team will be there by helicopter with the help of BGB on Friday, she also added.

Ham is usually higher during winter and spring and children are most sufferers of the virus.

Sajek UP Chairman Nelson Chakma Nayan said that the ham outbreak has occurred at the three border villages of Ward No. 7 of Sajek UP, Arunpara, Newthang Para and Haichapara recently. The children are mainly infected and five of them died in the last few days.

He said the incident was reported to the concerned authorities but said he too did not receive accurate news on time due to the remoteness.

Baghaichari UNO Ahsan Habib Jitu said, "For the last few days, I have been receiving news from three villages of the remote and border villages of Shialdah about the ham outbreak on children." The health department immediately took action after reporting the matter. However, due to the villages being too far and the long walking, it is difficult to provide medical care at the right time.

Sajek UP is the most remote area of Baghichhari, the largest upazila in the country. The rest of the area except the Sajek tourist center of UP is extremely remote. Of these, the Shialdah is considered the most inaccessible.
