People of different classes and professions are fishing with nets
In Faridpur’s Alfadanga, people of different classes and professions are fishing with nets – it’s like a fishing festival that reminds us of the old tradition of rural Bangla.
Such an image was seen on Thursday in the canal at Nishinath Tala area of Panditer Bana in Bana UP of the upazila.
Fishing went from morning till noon. About 20-25 amateur fish hunters of the area came to the canal with fishing nets. Various species of native fishes including Puti, Tangra, Taki, Baime, Shrimp, Shoal, Bele were caught in their nets.
Locals Ishaq Sheikh, Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Pradeep, Ashutosh and several others who took part in group fishing said that fishing with nets was a daily occurrence once. It is no longer seen as the water of the canal has slowly started to recede. As a result, people in the area took the initiative in this way. Upon receiving the news, many people joined the festival, however, a small number of native fishes caught in the nets, they added.
UP member Md. Aliyar Rahman said fishing with nets has been started at the initiative of the locals. More than 20-25 people are fishing in different places of the canal. Starting from Thursday, fishing like this will continue for one or two more days.
Alfadanga Upazila Chairman AKM Zahidul Hasan Zahid said the scene was on the “verge of extinction”. I congratulate the locals for taking such an initiative. They have brought back the old tradition and organized it after a long time.
