Fire kills 5 at high-rise building in Mumbai

At least five people were killed after a fire broke out inside a high-rise building in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital on Thursday, police said.

The fire broke out on the 11th floor of at a 15-storey building of Sargam Society near Ganesh Garden at Tilak Nagar in Mumbai. 

“Fire broke out today in a high-rise building of Sargam housing society here at Tilak Nagar in Chembur,” a police official said.  

“Police and firefighters are at the spot to contain the blaze and douse the fire. So far we don’t have the figures about casualties in the incident.”

However, local media reports said three people were killed in the blaze.

Three victims have been identified as 72-year-old Sunita Joshi, 72-year-old Bhalchandra Joshi and 83-year-old Suman Shrinivas Joshi, a local media report said. 

“The three elderly residents of the building were taken to the hospital but they succumbed on the way. Another senior citizen was admitted to a hospital for suffocation.” 

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
