The High Court today has ordered to pay compensation of Tk 30 lakh to the families of four people killed in a fire at the United Hospital in the capital’s Gulshan. At the same time, the court has issued a rule asking why each of the affected families will not be ordered to pay compensation of Tk 15 crore.
The High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Khairul Alam passed the order on Monday.
Lawyers Barrister Muntasir Uddin Ahmed and Anik R Haque appeared for the writ petitioners in the court. They were accompanied by Niaz Mohammad Mahbub and Shahida Sultana Shila. Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud and Barrister Tanjib Ul Alam appeared for the hospital authorities.
The High Court has ordered to pay compensation of Tk 30 lakh to the four families of the victims of the fire that killed five people at the United Hospital in the capital’s Gulshan on July 15, 2020.
However, the High Court did not issue any order in this regard as the family of Moniruzzaman, who was killed in the fire, had decided to take compensation out of court through discussions with the hospital authorities. A single virtual high court bench headed by Justice M. Enayetur Rahim passed the order.
It is worth to be mentioned that a fire broke out in the Corona Isolation Unit of United Hospital on the night of May 27, 2020. Five bodies were later recovered from the spot. Lawyer Niaz Mahmud filed the writ petition seeking necessary directions in the incident.
After hearing the writ petition, the High Court sought separate reports from the Police IG, fire brigade authorities and RAJUK on the incident. Later, three reports submitted to the court revealed the negligence of the hospital authorities.
