The ferry service on Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Banglabazar routes will be halted during the day from Saturday (May 8) as per the government instructions to curb the spread of coronavirus.
“Even if it is closed during the day, the ferry service will be normal for Freight transport at night,” confirmed BIWTC chairman Md. Tajul Islam.
According to ghat authorities, people are returning home on the Paturia-Daulatdia route ahead of Eid. Crowds and vehicles have been flocking since dawn, especially in the morning, the pressure of vehicles and passengers increased in the ghat area. Despite the government’s lockdown, passengers are returning home crammed with the risk of Covid-19 infection.
Besides, people flocked at Shimulia ferry terminal in Munshiganj on Friday morning ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. Hundreds of thousands of people from different parts of the country, including Dhaka, gathered in the ghat area by private and rented vehicles.
The ghat authorities said launches and speedboats on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route were closed due to the ban on public transport. Vehicle crossings are being disrupted on the ferry. Thousands of private and goods vehicles are stuck in the ghat area. There are currently 13 ferries plying the route for these passenger and vehicle crossings.
BIWTC Shimulia Ghat Manager (Commerce) Safayet Ahmed said the crowd of homebound people from the southern part of the ghat has been increasing since morning. Thousands of vehicles are waiting at the ghat to cross the river. As the launch-speedboat is closed, the passengers are having difficulty in crossing the ferry.
