Ro-Ro Ferry Shah Makhdum also known as ‘Ferry Shahjalal’, a ferry on the route of Munshiganj’s Shimulia and Madaripur’s Banglabazar, has collided with a pillar of the Padma Bridge, as a result, the ferry’s bottom part leaked. 20 passengers were injured at the time.
The accident took place when the helmsman of the ferry lost control on Friday morning on the way to Munshiganj’s Shimulia ghat from Madaripur’s Banglabazar ghat.
However, there was no major danger as the ferry was brought under control immediately. Later, the helmsman came to Shimulia ghat without any hindrance and anchored the ferry.
Abdul Rahman, the helmsman of the Ferry Shah Jalal, said, “I suddenly lost control as the electronic system of the ferry failed. Due to the strong current in the river, the ferry hit the pillar.”
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has suspended its master Abdur Rahman for failing to operate the ‘Ferry Shahjalal’ on the Munshiganj’s Shimulia-Madaripur’s Banglabazar route.
“BIWTC issued an order regarding this in the afternoon,” said senior information officer of the Ministry of Shipping Md. Jahangir Alam Khan. “The ferry master has been fired for the incident.”
