Fear of loss in rain-hailstorm

Chandpur’s farmers have been worried about taking the crops in home sudden rain and hailstorm in the middle of Falgun. 

The potato harvest festival is going on in the Upazila. There are also other crops. So, thousands of farmers of the district are now passing the busy time in harvesting crops. But they are worried about the sudden loss due to rain, hailstorms from Monday.

In Chandpur, the target of potato production is 2,24,500 metric tonnes has been set in 8,825 hectares of land. In every Upazila this year, due to a good yield of potatoes, the relief smiles were seen in the face of the farmers. But they are worried about the loss of potato due to hailstorms. It has the potential to cause irreparable damage.

Abul Khair, a potato cultivator of Kalyanpur district of Sadar upazila, said, “I have cultivated potato this year without worrying about the losses of last year. But due to the hostile weather this year, the risk of losses has also increased. If there is a loss this year, cultivating potatoes in the future will be difficult.”

Deputy Director of District DAE Md Abdur Rashid said, “Now it is the time for harvesting potato. The natural disasters have caused fear of major losses to potato farmers. In the meantime, 1,000 hectares of potato was removed. However, some potatoes will be destroyed in the rain-storm. We urge the farmers to remove water. This will reduce the number of losses.”
