Potatoes have bumper yields in Bogura’s Nandigram upazila. Farmers are quite happy with the current market price of potatoes. As a result, the farmers who faced financial loss due to less price last season are optimistic about the good price of potatoes.
Talking to the Upazila Agriculture Office and the farmers, it was learned that the target of cultivating varieties of potatoes was set 121,500 metric tonnes on 4,500 hectares of land in the upazila this Rabi season. However, potatoes have been cultivated on 3,480 hectares of land. The work of picking potatoes from the field is underway in full swing.
Meanwhile, potato wholesalers are going to different villages instead of going to the market and buying potatoes directly from farmers. Farmers are also able to sell potatoes conveniently from the village. The current wholesale market price of potatoes is Tk 10,000-12,000 per kg.
Ruhul Amin, a farmer of Birpali village of the upazila, said he cultivated potatoes on 100 bighas of land. Ranjit Kumar, another farmer from Muradpur village, said that he cultivated potatoes on 30 bighas of land.
As the fertile soil of the cropland of the upazila is very high, Rabi crop is cultivated besides paddy which is cultivated 3 times a year. Potatoes have bumper yields this season. 120 to 130 maunds of potatoes worth Tk 25,000-30,000 are available per bigha.
When asked, Upazila Agriculture Officer Adnan Babu said the bumper yield of potatoes has been harvested in the upazila. Farmers will benefit a lot in this season.
