The farmer’s sugarcane is dying of red rot disease and pest attack in Raninagar, Naogaon. Farmers are being frustrated as the sprinkle medicines were not working

It is learned that sugarcane has been cultivated on almost 100 bighas of land in the field of Chokmunu village of Raninagar Upazila. Farmers expected to be quite profitable as the sugarcane prices are good in the beginning.

But suddenly there was a massive pest attack in sugarcane fields about 3-5 days ago, along with the red rot disease. Nothing works by applying for the medicines from different companies, they said.

“After seeing a little red color, the entire land is infected and dying within four to five days,” said Abdus Samad, a sugarcane farmer of Chokmunu village.

Khandaker Abdus Salam, another farmer of the village, said that he cultivated sugarcane on about 3 bighas of land. “Most of the land has died of sugarcane’s insects and red-colored disease,” he added.

The farmers, however, complained that they were not receiving any help from the Agriculture Office despite the sudden onset of the disease.

In this regard, Raninagar Upazila Agriculture Officer Shahidul Islam said that sugarcane cultivation has been done on 10-12 hectares of land in Raninagar Upazila. “The red rot diseases have caused due to waterlogging for rain and the seed-borne diseases.”

Mentioning that the damage will be less as the sugarcane harvesting has started, he said, “The farmers are advised to cultivate vegetables on those infected lands by cutting the rotten sugarcanes.”
