Farmers’ returning to good days by solar pump

Solar power is being used all over the world as an alternative source of electricity. It is now an integral part of Bangladesh. In addition to the important activities of everyday life, solar power is being widely used in agricultural land for irrigation purposes.

After the introduction of solar powered irrigation pump in Rajshahi region for the first time in the country, its use has now started in Naogaon. Porsha, Sapahar, Niyamatpur Upazila started irrigation water in agricultural land with solar powered pumps.

Gofur Mandal of Porsha upazila said, “Irrigation cannot be done on the ground for much of the power outages. This increases the risk of damage to crops. But there is no risk of electricity outage in solar power pumps.”

He also said, “Water is being collected from the Atrai river and pond through the pipeline. And the water is going through pumps on the farmers’ land. In this, 180 bighas of land are getting full irrigation facility from a pump. Increasing the quality of the crop increases, the yield is also increased.”

Niyamatpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Syed Ahmed said, “Farmers have been collecting crop year after year due to the establishment of solar powered irrigation pump. They are economically benefited by this.”

“Hundreds of farmers in the upazila are benefitting in this irrigation system. Farmers of Naogaon are returning to good old days to use solar power in agricultural land.”
