Fake Covid-19 test report: Testimony against Sabrina, Arif today

The testimony against eight people including JKG Healthcare Chairman Dr Sabrina Chowdhury and her husband Ariful Haque Chowdhury in a case lodged over cheating by issuing fake coronavirus (Covid-19) test reports is scheduled to held today (Tuesday).
The testimony will be taken in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury. The testimony of 14 out of 40 witnesses, in this case, has already been completed.
The other accused in the case are - Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, Humayun Kabir Himu, Tanzila Patwari, Biplob Das, Shafiqul Islam Romeo and Jebunnesa.
According to the case details, Tejgaon police arrested Humayun Kabir, an employee of JKG Healthcare and his wife Tanzila Patwari on 23 June 23 and confessed in court on various issues including cheating under section 164 the next day.
Sabrina’s husband Ariful Haque Chowdhury and six others was arrested on the same day by Tejgaon police in a raid at JKG’s Gulshan office. Sabrina was brought to the Tejgaon Divisional Sub-Police (DC) office on 12 July at noon and interrogated. After the interrogation, the police arrested her in a case filed with Tejgaon police station.
The court, on 20 August, framed charges and fixed 27 August for testimony. The plaintiff in the case, Md. Kamal Hossain, on 27 August, testified in court against the accused. With this, the testimony of the case started.
Earlier on 6 August, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zulfiqar Hayad fixed 13 August for the hearing. At the same time, he transferred the case to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari for trial.
The probe committee, on 5 August, filed a chargesheet against eight people, including Sabrina and Ariful, for allegedly giving fake Covid-19 reports in the case. There, Sabrina and Arif were mentioned as “the masterminds”. The rest of the accused helped them to commit fraud and forgery.
According to the chargesheet, the other accused had collected samples from the patients on the instructions of Sabrina and Ariful and extorted money from the patients by making fake Covid-19 reports.
It is learned that 27,000 patients received Covid-19 test reports from JKG Healthcare. The samples of 11,540 patients of them were properly tested through IEDCR. The fake reports of the remaining 15,460 patients were made which were later found on the recovered laptops.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sabrina Sharmin granted bail on a bond of Tk 20,000 by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes in the case filed by the Election Commission (EC) on charges of fraud. The investigation report in the case was scheduled to be submitted on 3 January, however, the police could not submit the report, as a result, the court has fixed 1 February for the submission of the report.
Despite being granted bail in one case, Dr. Sabrina is yet to be released as she is currently in jail in the scam case for giving fake Covid-19 test reports.
