In the incident of gang-raping a young woman after tying up her husband at Murari Chand (MC) College dormitory in Sylhet, Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said on Saturday, “No matter which party the rapist belongs to, punishment must be meted out.”
The Foreign Minister said this on telephonic conversations with Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Golam Kibria and RAB-9 Commander Lt. Colonel Abu Musa in the afternoon.
Confirming the matter, Foreign Minister’s personal official Shafiul Alam Jewel said, “The Foreign Minister directed the police and RAB to arrest and punish those involved.”
“They had defiled the college by gang-raping a housewife in a dormitory of a traditional college. Due to which they will have no discount,” said AK Abdul Momen.
Earlier on Friday evening, a couple from Shibbari area of South Surma visited the MC College campus. At that time, Saifur and his associates — Rabiul, Tarek, Rony, Saifur, Mahfuj, and Arjun — took the woman and her husband to the nearby college hostel, where they tied up the husband and raped the woman. On information, police rescued the rape victim and her husband and sent the victim to the One-stop Crisis Centre at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The victim’s husband filed a case with the city’s Shahparan police station. Six BCL activists and three unidentified persons have been accused in the case.
