The hackers hacked several high-profile Twitter accounts in the United States while an investigation was launched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) following the incident on Wednesday.
The FBI said Thursday it is investigating the hacks, and said the high-profile accounts "appear to have been compromised in order to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud." The FBI also asked everyone to be vigilant.
The ruse discovered Wednesday included bogus tweets from Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg and a number of tech billionaires including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Celebrities Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, were also hacked.
"I am giving back to my community due to Covid-19! All Bitcoin sent to my address below will be sent back doubled. If you send $1,000, I will send back $2,000," said in a tweet from the hacked former US President Barack Obama's account. Such post was also made from Joe Biden's account. The U.S. Senate Commerce Committee has asked Twitter to comment on the incident by July 23.
According to a few tweets Tweeter said, “ We know that hackers were accessing and controlling high-profile verified accounts and controlling its tweets. Twitter is currently preventing its users from tweeting addresses related to Bitcoin wallets.”
Twitter says the hackers targeted their employees' access to internal systems and equipment.
