Ex-RAJUK chair Harun gets anticipatory bail

The High Court has granted six weeks anticipatory bail to former Rajuk chairman KAM Harun over Banani’s FR Tower design fraud case. 

At the same time, the court has also ordered to surrender former building inspector Md Aurangzeb Siddiqui and Assistant Authorized Officer Md Nazrul Islam to Dhaka’s Senior Special Judge Court within six weeks. 

On Tuesday, the High Court comprising bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam gave the order. Earlier, the hearing was fixed for the day after hearing. 

Senior Lawyer AM Amin Uddin argued for bail petition in the court. Md Khurshid Alam Khan was present for the ACC. Deputy Attorney General KM Amin Uddin Manik and Assistant Attorney General Gelena Begum China were present for the state. 

On June 26, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed two separate cases against 23 people, including the owner of Banani’s FR Tower, Rajuk’s former two chairmen, on charges of constructing the FR Tower from 16 to 23 floors with illegal forgery through design fraud. ACC Deputy Director Abu Bakar Siddiqui filed the cases with Dhaka Coordinated District Office-1. 

Besides, allegations were made under seven sections of the penal code and Section 5 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 for the construction through fake clearances, mortgage and sale of floor 19 to floor 23 of FR Tower.     

On March 28, the fire broke out in Banani’s FR Tower where 27 people were killed in the incident.
