Khandaker Sirajul Islam, a former footballer of the Khulna division who once shook the field with his magical performance, is now making a living by pulling a rickshaw in the Khulna metropolis due to financial difficulties.
“My dream was to play for the national team and will be a big player one day. But unfortunately, due to financial instability and leg injuries, the dream of playing for the national team was not fulfilled. I pull a rickshaw now,” he said.
Sirajul Islam said he had the dream since he was in fifth or sixth grade. “I watched football often in Khulna District Stadium. I could not go far due to a financial crisis.”
“I played football for several clubs. I played for Khulna First Division Football League, Dada Match, Shipyard, Muslim Sporting Club, Khulna Abahani, Dhaka Farashganj, Muktijoddha Club, Platinum and PWD Club,” he said, informing: “I have become a champion in the IG team. Then I was playing for PWD’s 2nd division and lastly for Farashganj.”
“Later, I got injured in legs and returned home.”
Khulna’s former footballer lamented that he has to pull a rickshaw due to a financial crisis. “I am hoping for a job. If I get job opportunities through various NGOs or sports organizations, I can easily spend the rest of my life,” he added.
Imtiaz Hossain Pilu, coach of Khulna women’s cricket team, said Sirajul Islam used to play well. He has played for various clubs with a reputation. “We watched him playing in the stadium. He played for a well-known team in the first-class senior division. Whose game we saw once, he is now a rickshaw puller,” said Pilu.
