Eskaton double murder: ex-MP’s son Rony’s bail plea dismissed

The High Court today has dismissed the bail plea of Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of former MP Pinu Khan, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a high-profile double murder case in the capital’s Eskaton.
The virtual bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice Shahed Nuruddin passed the order on Wednesday after hearing the bail petition.
Lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju was in favor of the bail petition in the court. On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar represented the state.
The Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Manjurul Imam, on 30 January 2019, ordered life imprisonment with a fine of Tk 50,000 to Bakhtiar Alam Rony. At the same time, a further six months imprisonment has been ordered for non-payment of the fine.
He then appealed to the High Court. The High Court accepted his appeal for a hearing on 30 April 2019. While the appeal was pending, Rony appealed for bail which was dismissed on Wednesday, said Lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju.
Autorickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw driver Abdul Hakim were injured when a black Prado car randomly fired shots at around 1:45 pm on 13 April 2015 at New Eskaton in the capital. They later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Monowara Begum, the mother of Abdul Hakim who was killed in the incident, filed a murder case with Ramna Police Station on 15 April accusing some unidentified persons. Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the police filed a chargesheet against Rony on 21 July 2015 in the court.
The court sent Bakhtiar Alam Rony to jail on 2 July 2015 after a 10-day remand in three stages. Since then, he has been in jail.
The court rejected Rony’s plea for release in the case and framed charges on 6 March 2016. Following the trial, the verdict was announced on 30 January 2019.
