A drug trader has been killed in a gun battle with police near a hill of Howakyang UP in Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Md. Selim, son of Qadir Hossain of Chakmarakul area under Howakyang UP. Three policemen -  SI Arifur Rahman, Constables Abdus Shukkur and Mehedi - were also injured in the incident.

Teknaf Model Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Das said that Selim was arrested on Tuesday night. Later, according to his confession, a team of police along with him conducted a drive in a hill of Howakyang UP to recover arms and Yaba tablets.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Selim's associates opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back for self-defence, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police rescued the injured Selim from the spot and admitted him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. The body was kept at the hospital morgue.

1,000 pieces of Yaba tablets, one LG, six-round cartridges and seven round cartridge-shells were recovered from the spot.
