Drug trader killed in Cumilla gunfight

A suspected drug trader was killed in a gunfight with police on Hossenpur-Lalmoti road at Uttar Bijoypur in Sadar South Upazila of Cumilla early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Bappy alias Rajib, son of Delwar Hossain Delu of Uttar Rampur village in the upazila. He was wanted in 11 drug cases, said police. 

Kamal Krishna Dhar, Inspector (Investigation) of Sadar South Model Police Station, said that tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive at Uttar Bijoypur around 2:30 am to recover drugs.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, Bappy and his associates opened fire on them forcing them to retaliate in self-defence which triggered a gun battle.

After the gunfight, bullet-hit Bappy was found lying on the ground and he was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Three policemen were also injured in the incident. 

Two sharp weapons and 1200 pieces of Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.
