Drug trader killed in Cumilla gunfight

A drug trader was killed in a gunfight with police at Managram area under Sadar Upazila of Cumilla on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, son of Jahangir Alam of Jorameher village in Sadar Upazila.

Nasir Uddin Mridha, Officer-in-Charge of Comilla District Detective Branch, said that acting on information that Saiful and his associates in Managram area, the police took position in the area.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug traders opened fire on police, forcing them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Saiful received a bullet. After the gunfight, police rescued him and took him to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 12 am.

Three policemen were injured during the gunfight. A revolver and 300 pieces of yaba tablets were recovered from the scene.

Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammed Abu Salam Mia said that Saiful was a listed drug trader and terrorist. There are 5 cases against him on various charges including arms and ammunition.
