A proposal with an aim to amend the Prevention of Violence against ‘Women and Children Act 2000’ to keep the provision of the death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape is being taken up in the cabinet today.
About this, Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said that following the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, an initiative had been taken to amend the death penalty for rape. The draft of the amended law is being proposed to the cabinet meeting for approval.
According to the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act, the maximum punishment for rape is life imprisonment. But after the recent incidents of rape across the country, people are protesting in different parts of the country, including the capital, demanding the death penalty for rapists. As a result, the government has taken initiatives to amend to keep the provision of the death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape.
