A Rajshahi court today acquitted all 13 accused in a case filed over the murder of Dipankar Saha in 2004, in Bagmara Upazila. There were a total of 18 accused in the case.

Five other accused had already died. Among them, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai was hanged in another case.

Judge Ismat Ara of Rajshahi Divisional Special Judge Court-1 on Wednesday passed the verdict, Prosecutor Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.

He said one of the 18 accused was hanged while four others died naturally. The five deaths have already been released. In the court, 12 of the remaining 13 accused were present while one was a fugitive. But all of them get bail in the case.

According to the case statement, on 29 April 2004, Dipankar Saha was brutally beaten to death in Hamirkutsa camp under the leadership of the then JMB leader Bangla Bhai. Dipankar's father Dwijendranath Saha filed a murder case with Bagmara Police Station on the same day.

The statement also said Dipankar was the lessee of Kashiabari Ghat in Atrai.

Prosecutors Shafiqul Islam said the court had acquitted the witnesses in the long-running case because they could not identify the accused.  Twenty witnesses testified in the case, he said.
