Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said the work on the six-lane of the Dhaka-Sylhet route would start from July this year.

He said this at a press conference in the conference room of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges at the Secretariat in the capital.

Before this, the Minister held a meeting with ADB Country Director Mr.  Manmohan Prakash.

Obaidul Quader said the initial cost of implementing the 209-km six-lane highway was around Tk 20,000 crore. “Most of the financing will be funded by the Asia Development Bank (ADB).”

He said there was a service lane on this side of the highway before. Now the new design has two service lanes on both sides. Work on the preparation of the
Development Project Proposal (DPP) will be completed next March. Then go to the Planning Commission. “After approval, we can start work. The project has 22 overpasses, 5 rail overpasses, 69 bridges, 29 footover bridges.”

Besides, two and three projects of South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) were discussed with the ADB. However, the ADB was thinking about financing the Faridpur and Barisal highways later, Minister Obaidul Quader also said.
