Dhaka North’s Mayor Atiqul

In the bye-polls of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Awami League candidate Md. Atiqul Islam was elected Mayor unofficially by a huge margin. 

He secured 8,39,302 votes with ‘Boat’ symbol while his nearest contestant Shafin Ahmed of Jatiya Party bagged 52,429 votes with ‘plough’ symbol.

Returning Officer Abul Kasem was announced the results from ‘Results Collection and Serving Center’ that was set up at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on Thursday night. 

Three other candidates – – Anisur Rahman Dewan National People’s Party’s (NPP) bagged 8,695 votes with ‘Mango’ symbol, Shahin Khan of People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) bagged 14,040 votes with ‘Clock’ symbol and independent candidate Abdur Rahim bagged 8,560 votes with ‘Tiger’ symbol – contested the by-polls to DNCC mayoral post.

The total number of voters in the election is 30,35,621. The number of polling stations is 1,295.

Voting was held in the capital from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

DNCC Mayor Anisul Haque died on November 30, 2017. Then the post fell vacant. In February 2016, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the Mayor’s by-polls.
