The 26th Dhaka International Trade Fair will not start on March 17, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and Commerce Ministry confirmed the information on Tuesday.

According to EPB sources, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed to close the fair for the time being. However, the source said that it will be informed later whether the 26th DITF will be organized on a changed date or not.

Earlier, the EPB had said it was preparing to hold the 26th Dhaka Trade Fair in the capital's Purbachal area. Under the direction of the Prime Minister, the work was being taken forward keeping in mind whether the fair could be started from March 17 or not. Preparations were underway to hold the fair at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center, the venue for the fair in Purbachal.

Earlier, in 2020, the area of the fair grounds including car parking at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar was 32 acres. The number of stalls and pavilions was 483. This time preparation was taken to organize the fair on a much larger scale.

The Dhaka International Trade Fair had been held at a makeshift place in Agargaon of the capital for the last 25 years. The Prime Minister used to inaugurate the fair on January 1 every year. This time it was postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Preparations were made to organize a month-long fair centering on the birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 17.
