The International Criminal Tribunal has issued a death warrant to former state minister and Jatiya Party (JaPa) leader Syed Mohammad Kaiser for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The tribunal's registrar Saeed Ahmed confirmed the development on Thursday afternoon. "We received a full copy of the verdict on Wednesday afternoon," he said. Today I have prepared it and sent the death warrant to the concerned office.

The tribunal's librarian Tapas Roy and Russell of the Despas branch sent a copy of the warrant to the Dhaka Central Jail Keraniganj, the Home Ministry secretary, the law ministry secretary, and the district magistrate.

Earlier on Thursday, the death warrant reached International Criminal Tribunal from the concerned branch of the Supreme Court.

It is being taken to jail from the tribunal after the death warrant was issued. The jail authorities will read out the death reference to the convict.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on January 14 upheld the death sentence of Syed Mohammad Kaiser for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 liberation war. A four-judge appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the verdict.

A Muslim League leader in 1971, Kaiser was sentenced to death on Dec 23, 2014, after being found guilty of murder, arson, loot, rape, and genocide in Brahmanbaria and Habiganj during the 1971 war.

On Jan 14, the Supreme Court preserved the death sentence against him in a majority verdict after Kaiser appealed against the death sentence.
