Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) is being upgraded to a 5,000-bed hospital, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque.

He made the remarks after inaugurating the newly constructed Cardiac Cathlab Zone-2 of the National Heart Institute and Hospital at Agargaon in the capital on Thursday.

Similarly, the National Heart Institute is being upgraded from 600 beds to 1,200 beds soon, he said.

The minister said the country's health sector has continued to deal with coronavirus as well as other medical services during the pandemic. We have to provide medical services to general patients as well as Covid-19 patients.

In the meantime, construction work of 8 high-quality cancer hospitals has been started in 8 divisions, he said, adding that the number of beds in all the hospitals across the country has been doubled.

Regarding the introduction of the corona vaccine, the minister said that so far the World Health Organization has not recognized any country for the vaccine. Whenever a country gets recognition, we will bring it to the country first.

Zahid Maleque said the government is continuing talks with other countries to bring the vaccine, adding that if the vaccine is approved, there will be no delay in bringing it to our country.
