In the Nangalkot of Cumilla, soil trader is running illegal dredging from the crop land for a long time. Babul, son of Kabir Ahmed of Srirampur village of Uttar Raycot union, is lifting sands using dredger machines.

Sources informed that, village doctor Rafiq Mia is filling his house side pond in Sarirampur village beside Hasanpu-Banggadda road purchasing sand from Babul.

According to the Balumahal Act 2010, removing sand or soil for marketing from the crop land except any open space, tea garden is prohibited. But Babul doesn’t care it.

Shamsul Haque, son of Fazlur Rahman of Alipur village, owner of illegal dredger machine, said sand lifting rate is eight taka per square foot. We have talked to Babul Bhai to fill the pond. In response to a question that how many days will take to fill the pond, he replied, it will take approximately 25 days. He is doing this for the sake of living for himself as well as his family although his knows it’s legally prohibited.

Regarding this issue, Babul Mia said, from my place, I am lifting sand, write what you can. I don’t care.

Sand buyer Rafiq (Doctor) said, “I gave the money to fill the pond. Where from he will lift the sand, this matter is of him.”

Due to lift sands by dredger machine, the surrounding cropland, houses, and roads are in danger. On the other hand, the fear of environmental disasters is increasing.

Meanwhile, the complaints of locals are not being taken by the administration to stop it, so sand lifting using illegal dredger machine is increasing day by day.

Nangalkot Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sohel Rana said that sand lifting using dredger machine is prohibited. Action will be taken against them.
