Court sentences 5 to death for Raju murder

A court in Rajshahi today has sentenced five people to die in a sensational Raju murder case in the New Market area of the district. At the same time, they were fined Tk 10,000. Nine more people were acquitted in the case.
The convicts are – Azizur Rahman alias Rajon of Dorikhorbona area in Rajshahi city, Sajjad Hossain alias Saju, Md. Rinku alias Boya, Ismail Hossain of Brahmbhapur village in Durgapur upazila, and Mahabur Rashid alias Rentu of Madariganj village in Bagmara upazila.
Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar Saha handed over the verdict at around 11 am on Tuesday, confirmed state lawyer Entazul Haque Babu.
Prosecution lawyer Entazul Haque Babu said Raju Ahmed was publicly beaten and stabbed to death on the evening of March 15, 2010, in the New Market area of Rajshahi city over a “land dispute”. Raju had a mobile phone shop in the New Market area. The next day, the victim’s father Esar Uddin filed a case with the police station.
He added that Raju’s family had a dispute with the accused Mahabur Rashid alias Rentu “over a land” in Bagmara. For this, Mahabur Rashid killed Raju along with the “hired” goons. There were 56 witnesses in this case. The court handed over the verdict after taking the testimony of 31 people.
There were a total of 14 accused in the case. The court acquitted nine people as the allegations were not proved. The accused were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. After the verdict, the five convicts were sent to Rajshahi Central Jail, the state lawyer said.
