Water transport strike is underway across the country demanding 11-points demand including a minimum wage of Water transport workers at Tk 20,000, free food allowance, stop suspending workers unnecessarily, stop terrorism and extortion.

The announcement was called from the human chain of the District Branch of the Bangladesh Shipping Workers and Employees Union under Bangladesh Shipping Workers Federation in front of the press club at Chashara of Narayanganj city on Tuesday afternoon.

Water transport workers have been on indefinite strike since 12:00 pm.

At the last meeting on July 20, it was decided to hold an indefinite strike across the country from July 23 at 12:00 pm, said Shah Alam, central president of the federation.

“The strike was made on July 25. Despite this, no action was taken from the owners in these three days. So far, the Department of Labor and Shipping Owners Association have not taken any initiative to negotiate. Due to this, the workers have been forced to call for a strike,” he also said.

Earlier, on April 15, when the water transport strike was called for a 15-point demand, it was assured to fulfill the demands within 45 days. But later it was not implemented. Therefore, a strike has been called in order to reclaim the 11-point demand.

On Wednesday morning, no ferries of the internal or long-distance route did not depart from the Barisal Riverport due to a naval strike. For this, the passengers have seen suffering at Barishal river port.
