Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzaque on Monday said the food production needs to be increased a lot more to cope with the potential food crisis caused by the coronavirus.

“We don’t have to stop there where unprecedented success and high growth of food production came this season. That is why steps are being taken to make it faster and accelerated,” he made the remarks at an online meeting with ministry officials and agency heads to discuss augmentation of Aman and Rabi crop production from his official residence in the capital.

The minister said the target for increasing the cultivation and production of Aus and Aman has been increased. In the meantime, various incentives including seeds, fertilizers, irrigation have been distributed among the farmers for Aus. “All kinds of efforts are being made so that there is no problem in seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, etc. in the next Aman and Rabi crop seasons.”

He said that the whole world is in turmoil today due to the epidemic of coronavirus. Meanwhile, various international organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Food Program, and the International Food Policy Research Institute, have expressed concern that the virus could disrupt global food production. “This can lead to a food crisis or famine in some countries.”

Considering this issue very seriously, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her address to the nation and other video conferences has repeatedly directed to increase agricultural production, said the Agricultural Minister. “She instructed to cultivate crops in every inch of land with the utmost importance.”

In line with the directives of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Agriculture is working relentlessly to not only continue the current trend of increasing food production in the country to deal with the COVID-19 disaster but also to accelerate it, the minister also said, adding, “So that there is no shortage of food or famine in the country.”

On the contrary, by meeting the demand of the country, Bangladesh can cooperate with its surplus food grains in the service of humanity in the possible food crisis of the world, added Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzaque.
