Coronavirus death toll surges past 200 in Iran

The death toll from new coronavirus epidemic jumped past 200 in Iran, reported BBC on Friday - citing sources in the country's health system.  

At least 210 people have died as a result of the new coronavirus disease in Iran, said the sources. The figure is six times higher than the official report. 

Earlier in the morning on Friday, the Iranian health ministry reported that eight new deaths related to Covid-19, increasing the official toll to 34. It also said 143 new cases had been detected, bringing the total to 388.

Citing the health ministry, BBC Persian reported most of the victims are from the capital, Tehran, and the city of Qom, where cases of Covid-19 first emerged.

There have been more than 83,379 reported cases of Covid-19 worldwide and 2,858 deaths since the disease emerged late last year - the vast majority in China. Meanwhile, 36,436 people returned home after getting well.
