The High Court has issued a contempt of court rule against the Deputy Commissioner (DC), the Director and Deputy Director of the Environment Department of Chattogram for not closing illegal brickfields there.
They have been asked to respond to the rule within 10 days of receiving a copy of the court order. Besides, April 8 has been set as the date for the next order.
On Thursday, a High Court bench of Justice Mojibur Rahman Mia and Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order.
The court passed the order on an application filed by the environmental organization Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB). Advocate Manzil Morshed was the lawyer for the petitioner. Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md. Russell Chowdhury was on behalf of the state. Advocate Kamrul Islam was in favor of the Department of Environment.
The High Court ordered closure and eviction of all illegal brickfields in Chattogram on December 14 last year, January 31 and February 25 this year. The directive was given to the director of Chattogram DC and Environment Department.
Although the brickfields owners appealed to the Appellate Division against the order of the High Court, the Appellate Division did not stay the order of the High Court.
In such a situation, time was taken from the district administration court to implement the court order. But even then the contempt of court rule was issued against the concerned including DC as the illegal brick kiln was not closed.
