Workers have been started the work of the under-construction hospital for coronavirus patients that was closed in the face of resistance from the locals on Saturday has started again from Sunday.

Confirming the matter, Ali Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, said that police had been deployed at the spot. “Akij Group is building the hospital on a temporary basis.”

The construction of the hospital was temporarily closed due to a misunderstanding on Saturday. It was decided to resume the construction at night. Accordingly, the construction began on Sunday morning, he also said.

Earlier, Akij Group, one of the country’s top local industries, was working to build a 301-bed hospital in Dhaka for the free treatment of coronavirus patients at the capital’s Tejgaon area on two-bigha lands of the company.

Noted that plot owners have built tin-shed slums around the hospital at Tejgaon Industrial Area. When the construction work began, rumours spread among the slum dwellers.

The locals thought that if there is a hospital for the treatment of coronavirus patients, then the virus will spread among them. In that view, 200 to 300 slum dwellers gathered on Saturday morning in front of the under-construction hospital gate.

After then, Shafiullah Shafi, 24 no. ward councilor and the officials of the Akij Group came to spot and assured that no hospital will be built and construction work will be stopped.

Later that night, a tripartite meeting was held at the DMP’s Tejgaon Zone DC office under the direction of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. There it was decided that the hospital is a great initiative and there is no risk of spreading infection from there. So, everyone later agreed to build a temporary hospital.
