The country's first heliport terminal is being constructed on about 100 bighas of land at Kawla near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka. The construction of the heliport will be completed by the next one to one and a half years.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed to build this international standard heliport. The Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) has already appointed a consultant.

According to unconfirmed sources, about 80 helicopters will be able to park at this international standard heliport which will cost of Tk 500 crore. It will be built on CAAB's own land on the east side of the railway line, south of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport roundabout.

CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mofidur Rahman said the construction work of the heliport terminal will be completed within the next one to one and a half years.

According to aviation analysts, businessmen, filmmakers, hospital owners and foreign investors are looking for alternative ways to save time in addition to avoiding traffic jams. Following this, the use of helicopters has increased at the corporate level. As a result, it has become necessary to build a helipad.

It has been learned that helicopters are being used for personal needs, shooting of movies, participation in political rallies, transportation of patients, board meetings of different companies and commuting to and from Dhaka. But every time they have to take permission to fly. But once the heliport is built, permission will no longer be required.

According to unconfirmed sources, nine companies currently have helicopter licenses. They have 27 helicopters. Several other companies have already applied for licenses.

Among the commercial helicopter service providers in Bangladesh, RNR Airlines, owned by Sikder Group, has seven helicopters.

Besides, South Asian Airlines has four helicopters, Bashundhara Group, Meghna Group and Square Group have three helicopters each. PHP Group and Bangla International have one helicopter. BRB Cable, Impress Aviation, and MAS Bangladesh have two helicopters each.
