Compensation for Russel: Verdict today

The final verdict of the High Court on the compensation of Tk 1 crore to Russel Sarker, whose left leg was severed after getting crushed by one of the buses of Green Line Paribahan in the capital, will be announced on Thursday.

Earlier on Tuesday, a virtual High Court bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Quader passed the order.

The left leg of the private car driver Russel Sarker was severed on April 28, 2018, after getting crushed by Green Line Paribahan at Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover in the capital. 

A resident of the same area of Gaibandha, Advocate Umme Kulsum Smriti, a former MP (now general secretary of Krishka League) of the reserved women’s seat in the Jatiya Sangsad, filed a writ petition in the High Court.

The High Court issued a rule in this regard on May 14 of that year, asked why Russel would not be compensated Tk one crore. 

After hearing a petition, the High Court order to pay Tk 50 lakh to Russel Sarker. He was asked to pay Tk 5 lakh per month. So far, the Green Line authorities have paid Tk 13 lakh after this instruction.

On March 12, the High Court ordered the Green Line Transport Authority to pay Tk 50 lakh to Russel within two weeks. At the same time, the transport authority was instructed to pay for the cost of surgery on his leg and prosthesis using the latest technology on his amputated left leg. The progress was also asked to be submitted to the court in the form of an affidavit by March 31.

However, Green Line Transport appealed against the High Court’s March 12 order in the Appellate Division, which was rejected on March 31. The order of the High Court remains in force.
