Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said Bangladesh is a non-communal democratic country. Citizens of all religions have to show respect to other religions in this country.

“Communal harmony must be maintained in the country. We have to intensify the surveillance of our leaders and workers in every area and hold peace gatherings, peace processions, peace meetings. Measures should be taken for communal harmony so that no conflict arises and all Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians can live well in this land,” the Premier said.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing the inaugural function of the newly built ‘Office Bhaban’ for Cumilla Awami League on Thursday afternoon.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined in the event virtually from Ganabhaban residence in the capital on Thursday afternoon.

The Prime Minister said, “The way I see people as human beings, the leaders and workers of Awami League also have to serve people as human beings.”

“At the call of the Father of the Nation, all people irrespective of religion and caste have taken up arms and made this country independent. So this freedom cannot be allowed to fail in any way,” she said.

“What happened in Comilla is very sad,” the Premier said. “The teaching of Islam is to respect human religion.”

Just as everyone has the right to practice their own religion, none can despise the religion of others. Islam does not teach this, the Prime Minister said, calling everyone to respect the religion of others along with respecting their own religion.

Cumilla Metropolitan Awami League President AKM Bahauddin Bahar MP delivered the welcome address from the Cumilla side. LGRD Minister Md. Tajul Islam, Awami League Organizing Secretary Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan were present on the outskirts of Cumilla.

A documentary on the newly built Awami League office was screened at the event, which began with the National Anthem.
