Cigarette, bidi prices go up in Budget FY20

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has proposed to increased the supplementary vat on cigarettes, bidi including tobacco products in the budget of the fiscal year 2019-20 (FY20) on Thursday.
In the proposed budget, it has been proposed to impose Tk 37 on 10 low-grade cigarettes and implement 55 percent vat. Every 10 pieces at Tk 63 on medium-grade cigarettes and implement 65 percent supplementary vat. For high-grade cigarettes, every 10 pieces at Tk 93 and Tk 123 with a supplementary vat of 65 percent.
The filterless bidi made from without the help of machines, every 25 pieces at Tk 14 with a supplementary vat of 35 percent. And for the filter bidi, every 20 pieces at Tk 17 with a supplementary vat of 40 percent.
Zarda (chewing tobacco) and Gul- another harmful product like cigarettes. Because of their direct use, it also has adverse effects on the body.
In order to reduce its use, it has been suggested in the Budget to fixing the price at Tk 30 of every 10 gram Zarda with 50 percent of the supplementary vat, and Tk 15 of every 10-gram gul with 50 percent of supplementary vat.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the budget program at 3:00 pm on Thursday. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal presented the budget. This is his first budget as a new finance minister.
