The vehicle movement on the ‘Chittagong City Outer Ring Road’ project – 17km long road from Chattogram to Patenga-Faujdarhat – will start in full swing by December this year. Already, more than 92 percent work has been completed.
Although the construction of City Outer Ring Road has not been completed yet limited traffic has been introduced considering the suffering of the people, said M Zahirul Alam Dobhas, chairman of Chattogram Development Authority.
“So far more than 92 percent of the work has been completed. Although the work on this road will be completed by December, it may take more time to complete the work on the connecting roads,” he added.
While visiting the spot, it has been seen that the road has been opened for limited traffic three months ago. Currently, freight trucks, lorries, covered vans of Chattogram port and private vehicles for commuting to the airport ply on this road.
The overall construction work of the 17km long road Kam Dam from Patenga beach to Faujdarhat on the shores of Karnaphuli has been completed by more than 92 percent. The road is built about 30 feet above sea level. 11 bridges and sluice gates have been constructed.
The fence has been provided so that the seawater does not hit the dam directly. 90 percent of the work has been done on walls and cement blocks. Besides, 90 percent of ancillary work has been completed. The beautification work on both sides of the road has also progressed by 50 percent.
Engineer Abul Khair, an official of Spectra Engineers Limited and also the contractor for the project, said work had been postponed for about three months due to the coronavirus. Otherwise, the road would have been built long ago. “The carpeting work is almost over. Only 450 meters of Chowdhurypara and 100 meters of Kattali single route work is left. We hope to complete soon,” he added.
The Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) has taken initiative to build an ‘outer ring road cum embankment’ to reduce traffic congestion in the metropolis and facilitate the movement of goods vehicles from the Chattogram port.
Donor agency JICA agreed to provide funding after a feasibility study on the 17km road from Patenga beach to Faujdarhat. Construction of Outer Ring Road started in July 2016. Initially, the cost of the project was estimated at Tk 865 crore, but after two amendments, it now stands at around Tk 2,500 crore.
