Chilahati-Haldibari rail link resumes after 56 years

Regular freight trains have started operation through Chilahati-Haldibari railway route between Bangladesh and India after 56 years.

The first stone-laden freight train from Damdim station of India entered Bangladesh on Sunday.

After the partition in 1947, 7 rail links were operational between India and then East Pakistan (up to 1965). At present, there are four operational rail links between Bangladesh and India.

These are - Benapole (Bangladesh) - Petrapol (India), Darshana (Bangladesh) - Gede (India), Rohanpur (Bangladesh) - Singhabad (India), Birol (Bangladesh) - Radhikapur (India). The Chilahati-Haldibari rail link is one such route that was operational till 1975.

Both the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh have pledged to re-stored all pre-1965 rail links between the two neighboring countries. As a result, the governments of both countries took up the task of restoring the rail link.

Following the restoration, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi jointly inaugurated the Chilahati (Bangladesh)-Haldibari (India) rail link during the PM level virtual bilateral summit on December 17, 2020.

This rail link was re-launched as the fifth rail link between India and Bangladesh.

The launch of this rail link will strengthen Bangladesh-India rail connectivity and bilateral trade.
