Campaign in 56 municipalities to end tonight

All kinds of campaigning in the 56 municipalities for the fourth phase of the ongoing municipal polls will end at midnight on Friday.

According to the local government election law, all campaigning has to be stopped 32 hours before the polling. Voting for the fourth phase of municipal elections will begin at 8:00 am Sunday. So, the campaign will have to stop at midnight on Friday.

The Election Commission (EC) has banned the movement of motorcycles in 56 municipalities for 54 hours from 12:00 am on Friday till 6:00 am on February 15.

Md. Jasim Uddin, Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has already informed the EC by issuing a gazette notification in this regard.

The notification said a total of 54 hours of motorcycle movement will be banned from 12:00 pm on February 12 to 8:00 am on February 15 on the occasion of the elections in 56 municipalities to be held on February 14. Besides, other mechanical vehicles will not be able to operate from 12:00 pm on February 13 to 12:00 pm on February 14.

It is further mentioned that the vehicular movement on the national highways will remain normal. At the same time, the ban will not apply to the transportation of emergency goods and other urgent needs. Vehicles of journalists, election officials, candidates, candidates’ agents will be exempted from this ban.

According to the schedule announced by the EC, the fourth phase will be held on February 14 in a total of 26 municipalities through ballot papers and 30 municipalities through EVM voting.

In the fourth phase on 14 February, municipal elections will be held in – Thakurgaon Sadar and Ranisankail, Rajshahi’s Nowhata, Godagari and Taherpur, Lalmonirhat Sadar and Patgram, Narsingdi Sadar and Madhabdi, Rajbari Sadar and Goalanda, Barishal’s Muladi and Banaripara, Sherpur Sadar and Sreebardi, Chapainawabganjs Shibganj,  Natore Sadar and Baraigram, Khagrachari’s Matiranga, Bandarban Sadar, Bagerhat Sadar, Satkhira Sadar.  

Besides, elections will be held in municipalities – Habiganj’s Chunarughat, Cumilla’s Homna and Daudkandi, Chattogram’s Satkania, Chandanaish and Patiya, Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur, Hossainpur and  Karimganj, Tangail’s Gopalpur and Kalihati, Patuakhali’s Kalapara, Chuadanga’s Jibannagar and Alamdanga, Feni’s Porshuram, Chandpur’s Kachua and Faridganj, Madaripur’s Kalkini, Netrokona Sadar, Jashore’s Chaugachha and Bagharpara, Rangamati Sadar, Shariatpur’s Damudya, Munshiganj’s Mirkadim, Jamalpur’s Melandah, Mymensingh’s Phulpur, Joypurhat’s Akkelpur and Kalai. Noakhali’s Chatkhil, Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura, Lakshmipur’s Ramgati, Faridpur’s Nagarkanda, and Sylhet’s Kanaighat.  

Chunarughat in Habiganj, Homna and Daudkandi in Comilla, Chandkanish and Patia in Chittagong, Gopalpur and Kalihati in Kishoreganj, Kalapara, Kalidarapur in Chuadanga and Alamdang in Patuakhali. Chaugachha and Bagharpara of Jessore, Damuda of Shariatpur, Mirkadim of Munshiganj, Fulpur of Mymensingh, Akkelpur and Kalai of Joypurhat, Chatkhil of Noakhali, Akhaurad of Brahmanbaria, Laxmipur.
