The cabinet on Monday asked the law enforcer and the local administration to be more alert and strict to enforce the social distancing and self-quarantine guidelines alongside carrying out massive awareness-raising campaign to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

The decision was taken at a weekly cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital this morning.

“From today, the law enforcement agencies and local administration have been asked to be more alert and strict in implementing the guidelines of social distancing and self-quarantine as the coronavirus situation aggravated today in comparison to yesterday,” Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam told a media briefing at the Secretariat following the meeting this afternoon.

The Cabinet Secretary said the cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, has repeatedly urged the people, that it (coronavirus infection) has increased a little. So, without the full support of the people, it is not possible to control this anyway. “All have been repeatedly requested from the cabinet to maintain social distance or implement quarantine at your own discretion.”

“Doctors are requesting us ‘we are out to provide treatment, please remain inside the house’,” Khandker Anwarul Islam said, adding that “all outside events of Pahela Baisakh have been canceled. Everything will be done digitally.”
