COVID-19 death toll tops 4000 in country, nearly 3 lakh infected

The number of people in the country who have died from the novel coronavirus has surpassed the 4,000 mark while nearly three lakh of people have been diagnosed with the virus, said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday.
In a press release issued this afternoon, the DGHS said that 45 more COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours, increasing the death toll from the pandemic to 4028 in the country. Besides, the tally of infections has surged to 2,99,628 as 2545 new cases were confirmed during the period.
According to the release, a total of 14,153 samples have been tested at 91 authorized coronavirus testing labs across the country over the last 24 hours. Besides, 3881 more people have recovered from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 186,756.
The first coronavirus death was reported in the country on March 18, ten days after the detection of the first COVID-19 cases.
The coronavirus, that first reported in China late last year, is now affecting 213 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances. As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 23,830,644 people has been diagnosed with the virus worldwide, as the death toll rises to 817,371 while 16,373,520 patients have recovered, according to worldometers data.
