The Election Commission (EC) has said that it will not be possible to hold the Chattogram City Corporation(CCC) elections by August 5 due to a worsened coronavirus situation and fear of heavy rains and landslides. The information was given in a circular signed by EC Deputy Secretary Atiyar Rahman on Tuesday.
According to the circular, the EC has decided that it will not be possible to hold the elections within the term of Chattogram City Corporation, i.e. by August 5, in compliance with hygiene rules, and considering the risk of heavy rains and landslides.
Besides Chattogram, by-elections in Bogra-1 and Jashore-6 constituencies were also set to be held simultaneously. But the EC postponed these elections due to the coronavirus outbreak. Later, the decision to hold by-elections in Bogra-1 and Jashore-6 parliamentary seats on 14 July was taken except CCC elections.
Noteworthy that the polling for the Chattogram City Corporation election was held on 26th April 2015. The term of this city governing body will end on 5th August next. According to the Electoral Law, there is an obligation to hold elections within 180 days prior to August 5.
