Bus crushed 6 as driver dozes off while driving

Six people were killed as night coach bus ‘Royal Express’ coming from Chattogram hit an engine-driven van at Sarojganj in Chuadanga Sadar upazila on Saturday morning. Four more people were injured in the incident. The night coach rammed the road for half a kilometer due to the driver’s sleep, according to the passengers of the bus.

The passengers told that only one driver was driving the night coach from Chattogram. He fell asleep after a long 12-14 hour bus ride, as a result, the accident happened. 

Locals have demanded exemplary punishment for the driver, caretaker and driver’s assistant of the night coach.

The deceased were identified as Milon, son of Mahatab of Kharagoda village in Sadar upazila, Sohag, son of Nuta Miah of Titudaha village, Shariful Islam, son of Abdur Rahim, Raju Ahmed, son of Niyat, Kalu, son of Haider Ali and Sasthi Kumar, son of Nitay of Basubhandardah village. They all were drivers of Alamsadhu, Pakhivan, and motorcyclist.

The injured were identified as Bablur Rahman, son of Bazlur Rahman of Sarojganj Bazar in Sadar upazila, Akash Hossain, son of Alamsadhu-driver Khodabox Ali of Titudaha village and Jummat Ali, son of Rahim Mandal. The injured were rushed to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital by locals. 

Upon receiving the news, Chuadanga Additional SP Abu Tariq and other senior police officials are visiting the spot.

Witness local journalist Md. Zia Uddin said the passenger night coach Royal Express left Chattogram on Friday evening for Chuadanga. When the bus reached Sarojganj Bazar in Chuadanga around 6:30 am on Saturday, it first hit an Alamsadhu. It then hit seven pedestrians, including a van, a motorcycle and another vehicle.

The night coach hit 15 people on the half-kilometer road from Sarojganj Bazar to Mitali Cinema Hall, killed five people on the spot. One died after being taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. 

Confirming the incident, Chuadanga Sadar Police OC Abu Jihad Md. Fakhrul said police went to the spot immediately after the incident. The injured were rescued and admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the bus has been taken into custody. Police are conducting an operation to arrest the driver and assistant of the bus, he further said.
