A class of influential and unscrupulous people built brick kilns in Sundarganj of Gaibandha, avoiding government rules - and this swallowing croplands.

Every year at least two or three new bricks are built in the upazila. Most of the kilns are grown on arable land. As a result, natural balance and environment are severely polluted.

Sirajul Islam of South Dhumitari village of Dahband UP of the upazila said the land of one bigha is being sold for Tk 6000-8000. “The land that is being sold for brick kilns  does not grow well for about three years.”

Karim Mia, of the same village, said brick kilns are being built everywhere. Thousands of acres of land used to cut top soil into brick kilns are losing productivity due to fertility.

Upazila agriculture officer Syed Reza-E Mahmud said the environment was being affected due to the brick kiln. Crops are being wasted. Besides, the poisonous ash falls on the leaves of green plants, including bananas, olives.

“I do not know any information about the brick kiln,” said UNO Md Suleman Ali.
