The Brac Bank filed an appeal petition at the Appellate Division seeking a stay on Tk15 Lakh compensation to jute-mill worker Jahalam, who suffered in jail for three years instead of the real accused in several corruption cases.
Lawyer Mohammad Asaduzzaman filed the appeal on behalf of BRAC Bank Limited at the concerned branch of the Appellate Division on Monday.
Earlier on September 30, the High Court ordered Brac Bank to pay Tk15 Lakh compensation to Jahalam. The bank has been ordered to pay the compensation within 30 days after receiving the verdict.
Jahalam, a resident of Tangail, had been in jail since February 2016 in 33 cases in place of the real accused - Abu Salek on charges of embezzling Tk 18 crore from Sonali Bank.
On February 4, 2019, Jahalam was freed from jail after the High Court acquitted him in 26 cases in which charges had been pressed. He was released after the court issued a suo moto order and asked the ACC to submit case documents in the form of affidavits.
The ACC submitted its report to the High Court on July 11, 2019. The report revealed that a "mistake" by the investigation officers of the anti-graft watchdog resulted in the wrongful conviction of Jahalam.
