Among the ongoing constructions, the task of constructing seven new river bridges were taken aiming to make the entire district of Pirojpur accessible by road from the rest of the country, the work of Eighth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge (also called Bekutia bridge) on Kacha river in Bekutia of Pirojpur was scheduled to be completed by 2021.
The bridge will create road connectivity between Barishal and Khulna divisions, around 18 districts of the southern region of the country in where billions of people will be benefited through the bridge as the authorities said they were confident that the bridge will be completed within the schedule.
Assisted by the government of China and supervised by Roads and Highways Department (RHD) the construction of the bridge over river Kacha started in 2017 as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction work through video conferencing and it scheduled to be completed by January 31, 2021 while the vehicles will be allowed to run on the bridge by 2022.
Several passengers who suffered on that route said that the vehicles are now being transported through the ferry. The movement of the road is increasing day by day. As a result, it is not possible to cross such a large number of vehicles through the existing ferry. Therefore, the government should be aware of the construction work of Bekutia bridge to be completed it as soon as possible.
Ajmer Majhi, a local people's representative, said that the construction of the Bekutia Bridge, a dream of the southern region, would create an economic zone in Pirojpur. At the same time, the economic picture of neglect and deprivation of the southern districts will be removed.
Pirojpur RHD Executive Engineer Masud Mahmud Sumon said, "We are satisfied with the progress of Bekutia Bridge construction work. Though we were confident that the bridge will be completed within the schedule the bridge could take more than a year to build due to the coronavirus situation."
The 998-meter long bridge will be constructed on Kacha river in Bekutia on Rajapur-Nayakathi-Bekutia-Pirojpur road while the width of the two-lane bridge is 13.40 meters. The expenditure was expected for tk 654 crore by the beginning of this year.
