The death toll has risen to 157 from a massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. More than 5,000 people were injured in the accident and many are still missing.
A spokesman for the country’s health ministry confirmed the information on Thursday.
A massive explosion took place at a warehouse containing explosives at the Port of Beirut on Tuesday afternoon local time. Around 3 lakh people have been displaced by the blast.
Lebanese officials linked the explosion to some 2,700 tons of confiscated ammonium nitrate that were being stored in a warehouse at the port for six years.
A two-week state of emergency was declared there on Wednesday. 16 employees of Beirut’s port, where the explosion took place, had been detained on Thursday. The rest are being interrogated.
