Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has joined Atletico Madrid after the two Spanish sides came to terms on a deal for the Uruguayan star.
Announcing the matter, Barcelona said that Atletico had agreed to pay €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) to acquire Suarez, who departs Camp Nou after six seasons with the club.
The Uruguayan star agreed with terms on a reduced salary with Atletico after a move to Juventus fell through because of passport issues.
Atletico will have to pay a nominal fee of no more than 6m euros for the 33-year-old, which will be based on variables such as Champions League qualification. Suarez will earn half of the 30m euros a year he was on at Barca.
Since joining Barca from Liverpool in 2014, Suarez helped the club win four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys and the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2015. He leaves as the club’s third-highest scorer with 198 goals behind Cesar Rodriguez (232) and Lionel Messi (634).
On Wednesday night, Barcelona released a statement thanking Suarez for his time at the club. The club said a "farewell event" would take place for Suarez at 11:30 BST on Thursday before a press conference. - BBC, AFP
